What determines if an address is deliverable or undeliverable?

Why are my marketing mailers marked as undeliverable?

When sending direct mail campaigns through Invelo, every mailing address is validated against the USPS address database. USPS checks whether the address can actually receive mail and then marks it as either Deliverable or Undeliverable.

This validation happens automatically:

  • When you import a list into Invelo.

  • When you run a skip trace on a contact.

How to Check Deliverability Status in Invelo

You can quickly identify a contact’s mailing address status by checking the envelope icon next to the address inside a property or contact record.

  • A green envelope with a check mark means the address is deliverable.

  • A red envelope with an “X” means the address is undeliverable.

What "Deliverable" vs. "Undeliverable" Means

  • Deliverable → USPS recognizes the address as valid and capable of receiving mail.

  • Undeliverable → USPS flagged the address as not deliverable. This can happen for several reasons, such as:

    • Invalid or incomplete street information

    • A full mailbox
    • Missing unit/apartment number

    • The property is vacant or not recognized as a valid mailing address

    • The address no longer exists in USPS records

    • Another reason determined by the postal carrier

Why This Matters

Knowing the deliverability status before you launch a campaign saves you money and ensures your mailers reach the right audience. Removing undeliverable addresses helps you:

  • Reduce wasted printing and postage costs

  • Improve campaign ROI

  • Keep your lists clean and accurate
